Along with Chilmark and Aquinnah West Tisbury forms 'Up-Island' Martha's Vineyard. The town is best known for it's rural agricultural heritage. It is home to the fairgrounds of Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society. In the village center you will find the famous Alley's General Store servicing local needs since 1858 along with a white steeple church, a quaint town hall and a weekend farmers market as well as some art galleries and inns.

West Tisbury was first settled in 1669 by English Settlers as part of the town of Tisbury. It was the last town on Martha's Vineyard to be incorporated. With over 34 square miles it has the historically been the farming community of the Vineyard. It has a year round population of approximately 2600 and slightly over 1,000 households. The population grows to several times that in the summer months.

Just south of the forest lies the Martha's Vineyard Airport which the town shares with Edgartown. There are several refuges and reservations around town along with many acres of State Forest, scenic beaches and rich farm land.
