Aquinnah
Aquinnah Appraisal Services Aquinnah is the most remote town at the westernmost end of the island and towering 150 ft over the sea. The town is best known for the brightly colored clay cliffs, which is a national landmark and are protected and forbidden to climb or touch.
Aquinnah, in the Wampanoag language, means the land beneath the cliffs. Prior to 1998 the town was know as Gay Head. and is still called that by most islanders. With a population of just over 300 and just under 150 households it's just has 5.4 square miles of land and is the smallest town on the island.
The Gay Head lighthouse was built of red bricks made from the clay of the cliffs and is open for sunset tours on summer weekends. The restaurants and shops at the Cliffs are favorites of visitors and islander alike during the summer months.
To the southwest of Aquinnah is Noman's Land a wildlife refuge and to the right are Elizabeth Islands which include the island of Cuttyhunk and separates Buzzards Bay from Vineyard Sound.
